The Gift of Vision

On February 10, we had the opportunity to partner with Dr. David Way and the Spring Klein Vision Center to host a free vision screening for some of the families in our community.

Many families do not have vision insurance and lack access to the care they need. Thanks to Dr. Way, his incredible staff, 11 optometry students from the University of Houston and several of our volunteers, we were able to provide much needed vision screenings to over 50 adults and children. Dr. Way’s team spent the day making families feel welcome and providing them with excellent, personalized care.

Almost everyone who was screened needed glasses. Volunteers were there to assist them as they tried on frames to select just the right look for their new glasses. For some, these will be the first pair of glasses they have ever received.

In addition to providing the gift of improved vision, these vision screenings also allow Dr. Way and his student assistants to detect other potentially dangerous health conditions such as high blood pressure. Individuals from low-income families have twice the risk of serious illness and premature death than those in higher socioeconomic levels.

We are thankful for our partnership with Dr. Way and the University of Houston. Together we can make our community stronger by investing in families and promoting community health.

Dr. Way grew up in Houston and has been leading our Vision Initiative since its inception.

I am very grateful for the good work the doctor and his team did. We felt welcomed and had a wonderful experience at the Vision Screening. We’re thankful for the help provided.
